Garbage & Recycling
Regina's residents deserve a clean and efficient waste management system. As your Councillor, I will work to improve our garbage and recycling programs to make them more user-friendly, sustainable, and cost-effective. Here are my key priorities:
Increased Education and Outreach: I will champion clear and accessible education initiatives to ensure residents understand what goes in each bin. This includes promoting resources like a user-friendly app or website with searchable waste guides and collection calendars.
Reduce Contamination: Contamination in recycling bins is a major issue. I will advocate for targeted education campaigns to tackle this problem. This could involve resident workshops, clear bin signage upgrades, and potentially implementing a "pay-as-you-throw" system for heavily contaminated bins (only after exploring all other options).
Expanding Recycling Options: I will explore expanding the types of materials accepted in our recycling program. This could include items like plastic bags, electronics, and textiles, following best practices in responsible recycling.
Composting Initiatives: I will investigate the feasibility of introducing curbside composting or community composting drop-off points. Composting reduces landfill waste and creates nutrient-rich soil for our parks and gardens.
Investing in Infrastructure: We need to ensure our waste management infrastructure is efficient and up-to-date. This includes exploring investments in new recycling facilities and waste-to-energy plants (following strict environmental guidelines).
Supporting Local Businesses: I will advocate for policies that prioritize awarding waste collection contracts to Regina-based businesses, where possible. This keeps jobs local and strengthens our economy.
Transparency and Communication: I will hold regular ward meetings to discuss waste management concerns and keep residents informed about any changes or proposed initiatives.
By working together, we can create a waste management system that is efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective for all residents.
